Gift guide · Christmas 2026
Gifts for someone who loves Toronto
You know the one. They still say "Bloor-Yonge" like it's a personality trait. They have opinions about the best patty. They smile at every passing streetcar. What do you give them?
Something personal.
Something that moves.
Something with a story.
Here are our Toronto gift ideas for 2026, sorted by the person you have in mind: the proud local, the friend who moved away, a new home, the transit fan, and the couple with a station of their own.
How to choose a Toronto gift
The best Toronto gifts are about their Toronto: a street, a corner, a station, a summer. Three questions help.
- Which part of the city is theirs? A neighbourhood, a line, a ballpark, a beach. Start there.
- Will they still notice it in a month? Most decor fades into the wall. Pick something that keeps giving.
- Is it made here? Toronto has wonderful small makers. A local gift carries a bit of the city with it.
For the proud Torontonian
They know which exit at Union. They correct people who say "the TTC is always late" (then complain about it themselves).
- A print of their own neighbourhood by a local illustrator. Many Toronto artists draw neighbourhood maps; small studios often take custom requests.
- A book on Toronto's history from an independent bookshop: the lost rivers, the old streetcar lines, the neighbourhoods before the condos.
- The Toronto Live Map. Their city, engraved in wood, with a light in every subway station that glows as a train arrives. It's the one piece of Toronto decor that changes every minute.
For the one who moved away
Vancouver. Calgary. London. Tehran. They left, but they still check the Leafs score and still miss the lake in July.
- A care package of things they miss from home: coffee from their old roaster, a jar from the corner shop, a candle from a Toronto maker.
- A framed photo of their old street, taken this year, so they can see what changed.
- The Toronto Live Map. It works anywhere with Wi-Fi, so Toronto keeps running on their wall. When it's rush hour on Line 1, they will see it. The first campaign ships to Canada and the USA.
For a new home: Toronto housewarming gifts
First condo. First house. First place without roommates. A housewarming gift should become part of the home.
- A plant from a local nursery, with a note on how to keep it happy.
- Something for the first dinner: a Toronto-made hot sauce, a good loaf, a bottle from an Ontario winery.
- A statement piece for the wall. The Toronto Live Map is 20 × 16 inches, hangs like a picture and plugs into one USB-C cable. Renter-friendly, too. It becomes the first thing every guest asks about. Our Toronto wall art guide helps pick the wall.
Buying for clients? Realtors and mortgage brokers often look for closing gifts that last. A map of the city they just bought into is one people tend to keep. Write to info@vivolit.ca about several maps.
For the transit fan
They can name every station on Line 2 in order. They have a favourite subway car. They rode Line 5 in its first week.
- A day of riding something new: the newest stations, a ferry to the Islands, a streetcar line end to end, with lunch at the far end.
- A good book on transit maps and design, the kind that explains what makes a great map work.
- The Toronto Live Map. Real open data, every 20 seconds, 108 station lights. Lines 1, 2 and 4 are live today; Lines 5 and 6 are engraved and go live when their data is public. Our guide to Toronto's subway lines and our Toronto subway history are fun reads for them too.
For "the station where we met"
The platform where you missed the train and met someone. The stop near your first apartment together. The station where you said yes.
For anniversaries and weddings, a map with your station on it is a quiet, daily reminder. Point to it. Tell the story again. Then watch it light up when a train pulls in.
For kids who love trains
Some kids know the trains better than the grown-ups. For them, a few calm ideas:
- A subway adventure: pick a line, ride it end to end, and let them call out the stations.
- A picture book about Toronto, to read before bed.
- The Toronto Live Map in their room, on a high wall, as a gentle night-light: the Glow mode breathes softly, and a night schedule can switch it off at bedtime. It's wall art with a USB-C cable, so hang it up high, out of small hands' reach.
